review: 2 girls and their tieks flats

you've heard me talk often of my bestie I. i'm so excited because today, she's joining us as a guest poster with a collaboration!! we both commute to work. mine will involve dropping off the kids at school and pick ups while I commutes on foot and by metro. we work long hours so our weekends are crammed with marathons running back and forth from one thing to another with a long list of errands. instead of heels, we are now often wearing flats at the office. i recently got tieks classic flats in mustard yellowI has a pair of the classic flats in lilac

we decided to put our "tieks to the test"
2 girls. 2 countries. 2 different sized feet. 2 pairs of flats. 2 honest opinions.

Hi, everyone, this is P’s friend I, coming to you from the nation’s capital, Washington, DC!  As you all know, P is one of my besties and when she asked me to guest blog with her to review these fun Tieks flats, I jumped at the opportunity. Here in DC, I do tons of walking to and from work and on the Metro, so comfy walking shoes is a necessity for me. I also tend to carry my life in my workbag (P always gets after me for bringing everything but the kitchen sink in my tote), so the packable nature of these flats was also a huge plus for me. I mean, cute, comfy flats that fold up to the size of a pack of index cards?  Sign me up, yes please and thank you. Enough jabbering on to my review!

The FIT

P: my major deal breakers for flats (for any shoe but especially for flats) are 1. the back of the heel and 2. the side (where bunions are born). if shoes cut me there, it is game over. don't go past go. i can't tolerate the discomfort so if any one of those two points get hit, the shoes can't stay. this is not the case for these tieks. next test is walking around in them, and i've worn them on the commute and on my marathon weekends. while the sides are snug (a given with banana type flats), they did not pinch. i have spent easily several days' worth of walking in them and have no complaints. no  pain, no blisters, etc.

I: Like P, I cannot stand to have shoes that rub the sides of my feet or my heels.  That’s a sure fire way to have the shoes either returned immediately or sold on eBay. Lol. However, these flats were comfortable and not binding right out of the box. I felt that the elastic was snug, but it definitely did not irritate my feet or constrict them in any way. No complaints to report!

The COLOUR

P: the vibrant yellow is hard to capture - the picture above was in direct sunlight using my iphone with no flash and no filter. the bottom pictures were taken on an overcast day. i'd have to say it's a bit of both - and this colour is a chameleon. it is a true yellow though, as opposed to veering more towards orange. those little blue pads at the bottom are not for aesthetics. i felt much more arch support in these flats. like walking on air.

I: Unfortunately, the mustard yellow that P scored was sold out in my giant size, but I am perfectly pleased with my Lilac flats.  Purple is my favorite color and the shade of these flats is vibrant and very versatile. I can see these matching several outfits in my closet. I would say these flats are definitely more of a deep purple than their name “Lilac” suggests.

on the metro!

The SIZING

P: the tieks sizing chart is accurate. i ordered an 8 based on it (i'm a US 7.5 in shoes). it fits perfectly and a 7 would have been too small. the flats came in a cute compact box with all the fixings: individual bags, so you can store them in your purse and switch over and a little wee bag that folds out to become a tote to carry your heels. they have really thought of everything.

I: I am typically a 9.5 US, but ordered a 10 US (no half-sizes are offered); however, the flats fit fine and were extremely comfortable after a full day of commuting. The individual shoe bags that come with the flats are great for storing the flats and slipping them into your overstuffed workbag or purse!

OUR 2 CENTS

P: tieks, where have you been all my life? these are hands down one of the cutest and most comfortable flats i own. i'll definitely get more.

I: I will be getting another pair soon in patent or a fun print and highly recommend that you do too!

  1. Such a fun review - getting 2 different viewpoints! I've definitely had nights where I felt like purchasing some foldable flats (I think Shoppers sells a pair - nowhere as nice as Tieks of course)...there's nothing I hate more than hobbling around in shoes that hurt!

I like how the bag can transform from a small one to hold the Tieks to a larger one to hold your shoes - what a great idea!

    1. thank you Ella! i'm so happy you liked this. we thought given that we have two different sizes and we often buy similar (ok identical) shoes, it would be good to see if the experiences were consistent. xo

Did you have them shipped to your friend in the US or to Canada?
I wonder if the taxes are included in the shipping fees?

    1. FYI, I emailed and this is the reply I got:

      Hi Ava,
Thanks for writing in! Duties and taxes should all be included in the price of your shipping option, so you shouldn't have to pay :). I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any additional questions!

      Cheers,
      Maggie

  6. Thanks for such great reviews! I've been hearing about how comfy these are but just couldn't believe a flat with an elasticated back could feel great on the foot; those *always* cut at my heel and make me feel a bit stabby. I might just have to try these out!

    1. thank you Lucy! the heel cut is torture. i didn't find that with these and hope it's the same for you! please keep me posted! xo

    2. Tieks don't have elastic at the back, only the sides and front. At the back is a nicely padded section that does hug your foot, but doesn't cut. I am about to buy my 9th pair.

  10. I've been looking for a pair of good flats that I can fold and fit in my bag in cases of emergency. I walk and work in the city and have had my fair share of ruining heels from sidewalk cracks. I never found a pair that seems to have good support and still look stylish at the same time. I really like these, so I would be giving them a shot since you have said nothing but great things about these. Thanks for the very detailed and helpful review! :)

    1. thank you Christine. walking in a commute in heels gets painful and it can't be good for your feet. finding a good pair of flats is so hard, so we were really happy that these did so well. absolutely a pleasant surprise to us. xo

  12. Great review!! I am sooo picky with my flats. I would pay this price if they were super comfy and looked cute too. I have a question (which Phi - please tweet me as I always forget to come back and check here....or get disqus! ;) ) Do they make your feet sweaty? For summer I tend to like open toe flats to let my feet breathe.

  14. Thank you for this review. P, you were speaking my language when you wrote: "my major deal breakers for flats (for any shoe but especially for flats) are 1. the back of the heel and 2. the side (where bunions are born)." This was my major question/concern when looking at the shoes. Happy you addressed this. Sounds like they are worth the investment.

    1. thank you! i appreciate your taking the time to comment, Rhonda. since this post, i have worn the mustard on a regular basis. the black pair i have were a smidge tighter when i first got them, but they loosened up after the first wear. i hope this helps!

  15. Hows the sole ? Sturdy enough ?

  16. My pair fell apart after 3 months of sporadic wearing, and the customer service people were not that helpful. The offered to fix them after I paid for the shipping. For a product at that price point, after only three months I'd expect a replacement.

  17. Hi. I just got my Tieks and I love them, but they feel snug in the big toe area. Did anyone else have this? I wear a size 9, so that is what I ordered. Tieks is sending me a size 10 just to compare.

  18. LOVE your Tieks. Great review too. Those Tieks remind me of my Puma Rhythm ballet flats which seem quite similar. This is what they look like http://www.flickr.com/photos/39715038@N00/5630746239/

    1. the pink ones i have are the ones i wear the most. they are rubbing at the toes and the heel. i think that is unavoidable.. i am also a klutz and tend to smash my toes into the sidewalk.. :/

  20. I just received my second pair -- from plain black to nude patent. My foot is very narrow and thin with a long big toe that puts me into an 8. I had to send back the huge on me 8 and replace with a 7. If you have a very narrow foot, you may have to go down a size. The shoes stretched fine as far as the length after a few wearings. However, I still have a a problem with the elastic cutting on the top of my foot near my big toe as well as discomfort at the heel where the thick finish is cutting. The styling and leather is lovely, and since only Munro makes a flat that sort of fits my narrow foot, I suppose I will have to suffer. The crinkly patent is less comfortable for me, because the seaming is thicker. If I had a wider foot that was easier to fit, I could probably find a more comfortable shoe at Zappos or Nordstroms.

    1. i think the patent would be painful just because of the type of leather. i wouldn't try those because i have typically haven't done well with patent generally. have you tried having the flats stretched out?

  21. They looks really comfortable and stylish and good for on-the-go! On a normal day, I would wear high heels but if they get too uncomfortable, I would switch into wearing flats. Would like to have at least 3 of these to match my outfit. Thanks for the great review!
