it's just a number

online shopping is equal parts searching and shopper CSI. when i was looking at this milly dress online, i was unsure about the size to get, because i never tried on milly pieces. searching the internet lead to saks, showing that the model was wearing a 4. it reassured me that i wasn't off with the sizing guide (if i arrived at a smaller size, i'd know it was wrong). customer reviews are also really helpful and i wish more retailers did that. if i can't find an identical item, i look for similar cuts and see what size the model is wearing.

i know this is not a mystery to those who are regular online shoppers, but it is important to know your measurements. with the prevalence of vanity sizing, my philosophy with time is not to care too much about the number anymore, so long as it fits.

  2. What a beautiful dress, P! I only do online shopping at places that I shop more frequently (unless they have free returns). You did great. The dress looks fabulous on you.

    1. thank you S! i don't get a lot of free return options in canada, so this was a gamble. i am so relieved it worked. ;)

  3. Lovely dress! The pattern is so bold! And so very true about knowing your measurements - brand sizing varies so wildly.

    1. thank you Kay! it is so true about brand sizing being so different one from the other - and even within their own lines!

  4. That galaxy print is so wonderful. I could see it dressed up or down with any season. For night, I'd wear it with opaque tights, stilettos, and a fun bright-colored coat (teal or purple, maybe?). So cute!

  11. Gorgeous dress! I love all of the colors. I agree with you about online reviews. More retailers should use them, especially J. Crew.

    1. j. crew should absolutely do that, especially with the variations on sizing for each of their pieces and because most people don't have a b&m store in their cities.

  12. that dress is SO gorgeous, P! I love the print! I hate when I can't figure out sizing on a new brand either, and it can be so frustrating when I can't find reviews. I usually always get it right when I just go with the model size as well (if they provide it!)

Untill now I have to say I was very lucky with my online shopping...if I am not sure I tend to choose the bigger size...better oversized fit than too

    1. Jana, that is another smart way to go. alterations to size down are always easier than sizing up.
