before i compiled my "what not to buy" list, i did pick up a pair of coloured skinny jeans at joe fresh (here). lately, after work, my colleagues and i gear up for our "second shift". during the day, i still dress for the office, but after official office hours, i change into more comfortable clothes but still appropriate in case someone bumps into us at work.

these jeans were $19 and the material is nice and sturdy - not flimsy at all. the colour is also really saturated and mustard-like. i like chunky sweaters, and the asymmetrical detail of this sweater is really fun and interesting as well, so it makes me less cranky to be at work late.

my friend at work has also started to email me links to kids' hallowe'en costumes. i'm really not ready for that yet. *do you find that people rush seasons?* thank you for reading, and happy friday to you! xox

a blog hop and a jcrew promo code!

i love blog hops, where i get to discover new blogs to read. actually, you know - i love reading the names people give their blogs. some are so clever and fun. makes me chuckle at my very no-nonsense title. this week's followers to friends blog hop is co-hosted by a day in a joyful life, the secret life of samara, and designs by emily F. the widget is at the end of their post if you want to link up too.

thank you to shopping with m and alexis at jcrewaficionada who posted a new j crew promo code (STYLE25) 25% off regular priced items with free shipping over 150$. the decision i must make is whether i get the navy wool schoolboy blazer at this time.

in the last promo, i got the mona tassel shoes, which i reviewed here. this promo was an extra 30% off sale items, and i scored these shoes for 130$ from their regular 310$ price. this is the reason why i'm reluctant to go ahead with the blazer - there are so many great j crew promos that come out. with this one, i save 25% and get 9.95 off for shipping. the total price with taxes still makes this blazer come out to 190$. it's not screaming "great deal" to me.

will you be getting anything with this promo, or will you be sitting it out? should i get that blazer now or wait for more cuts?

what to wear where: tailgate party and an invite!

today's challenge is an outfit for a tailgate party. melissa at ipickpretty and amy at 4ever29 gave me a good one because *is it uncool to admit this* i've never been to a tailgate party. it may be a function simply of where i live. it would have to be called a hockey city, so dead-of-winter tailgate parties wouldn't do well. if i were to go to one, i'd have no sports jerseys to wear, so likely i'd make this a casual outfit that could be easy going and comfortable. i have a black and purple ombre lululemon scuba hoodie that would be perfect. the other items in this board also already live in my closet. *do you like going to tailgate parties? what is your favourite part?*

i also learned how to navigate polyvore for this. um. it is addictive.

(outfit - gap sexy boyfriend jeans, lululemon scuba hoodie here, converse chucks, marc by marc jacobs natasha crossbody, zara t shirt)

and, an invite! i am also thrilled to be guest hosting a "what to wear where" challenge on October 9. i would LOVE if you could link up, pretty pretty please?  *insert puppy dog eyes here* the link-up i'm hosting is called "go-to travel outfit".  whether you are travelling by planes, trains or automobiles: what do you wear when you're about to go on a long haul? do you opt for total comfort or a little bit glam? show us your go-to travel outfit!

you can do one of two things - link up your blog post with pictures, or a polyvore set.  if you are interested:

1. please leave a comment to let me know if you're in! or just leave a comment to say hi! :)
2. please schedule your post for october 9th
3. link back to this blog and on october 9th i will have a handy dandy link up tool that will list all participants and their posts

i hope you can participate and really look forward to seeing you back here on october 9th!

peter pan

it is so interesting  how certain retro styles make their comebacks. i love how fashion returns for another hurrah in different ways. the peter pan collar is one of those retro styles that keeps going. according to wikipedia, it is "named after the costume worn in 1905 by actress maude adams in her role as peter pan, and particularly associated with little girls' dresses". seems like this little collar has had quite a few revivals, hasn't it? i recently bought a detachable beaded peter pan collar from a lovely seller on etsy, becoming the second piece of a peter pan accessory that i have (i posted a tobi necklace here). i am eagerly waiting its arrival. it's another way to wear a trend without committing to it on a piece.

what do you think of the peter pan collar?

this sweater is from simons, a canadian retailer, is sold out on the site but is called "retro tompe-l'oeil sweater" the site seems to stock with new items (and sell out of other items) quickly. the e-comm site is really user friendly and their sizing guide accurate. free shipping for purchases over $50 and free returns.

a week through instagram

it's another instagram week (except this is a belated one). it seems there is a definite theme of friendship and fuschia that i documented. it's been a long tough haul at work with a massive project i'm working on. i'm sorry i haven't been able to respond to everyone's comments yet, but once the dust settles, i promise that i will. i'd love to hear from you all to let me know how was your week!

1. one of my best friends, K sent me a little gift out of the blue with just a little note "for the P" in it. it was so so cute and then so meaningful when she said that she has an identical one. that makes this little adorable charm that much more special to me.

2. my colleagues and i have been pulling long crazy hours at work and on one of our dinner runs, two of them brought an amazing cupcake for me ( i am a bit bizarre, that i don't eat icing (or very little). i have a girlfriend who only eats icing!) another picked up this chanel le vernis nail polish (suspicious is a deep, dark fuchsia) which i had set aside but had no time to get. they were such sweet and thoughtful gestures which reminded me just how much i appreciate them.

3. wore my j crew raindrop lace tee to work with a pair of black dress pants. i never used to be a pink kind of girl, but now it's everywhere in my closet. this is one of my favourite tops because it is nicely cut, has a great colour and it is lace, of course!

4. as you know, i'm a big fan of sew petite gal, and her DIY creations. she made a gorgeous polka dot skirt for me (wore it here), and then she talked chevron. well that was a total no brainer! i was so surprised and touched to see she included a bracelet she had made too. love both and i can't wait to wear the skirt!

5. you know this photo-bomber's face well. i swear when we go outside to take pictures, the dogs are now always right at our feet. i'm sitting at the computer here writing a blog post, and our little diva paid me a visit. she really cracks me up. doesn't this look just say "hiiiii! whatcha doin'?"

6. we ended the work week last week with a team lunch. everyone got to relax for a little while and chat and catch up. i spend a lot of time and long hours with my group, so it's a blessing we all get along so well. and that we all love to eat. a lot! and we laugh together a lot, which is super important.

7. in my quest for boots that fit my calves, last week i picked up 2 pairs. the stuart weitzman mezzamezza boot (here) which is a knee high version of the 50/50 boots. i got this length because it is more work appropriate than an over the knee boot. i can push fashion boundaries here but an OTK boot would not be a good thing. i got the at the gift card event at holt renfrew a few weekends ago but i had to exchange them for a half size smaller than my US size. i still have to use up the gift card i got from buying the boots. wonder what i should get? for kicking around on weekends, i picked these distressed biker boots from zara.

8. i was looking for a work tote and the prada saffiano luxe tote has always been on my radar. jean at extra petite has a gorgeous one in caramel. over the summer, i tried out different sizes and colours. i narrowed it down to the medium in violet but i was never able to take the plunge. my sister and i were set to get matching coach legacy duffle bags in carnelian (see it here), but a good sale distracted us. i bought the tory burch robinson east west tote. it is a stunning fuschia pebbled leather with gold hardware (see it here in other colours). my sister got a kate spade cross body. the robinson is a soft leather and therefore not structured like the prada. however, it has a lot of room. it does not zip closed but there is a middle compartment that does zip, and can can hold an ipad. i also had a number of documents with me and they fit in there comfortably.

neon in the fall

this summer, the 80's were back with neon, and it is one element that found a way into my "classic with a twist" style easily. the tippi sweater is perfect for layering and transitioning to fall so i'm going to be wearing this well into fall and winter (you can get a similar one for an extra 30% off with the LOVEIT code - thanks alexis at jcrewaficionada who posted that this code is good til tomorrow). this adorable houndstooth skirt is from joe fresh, and it also came in a dress. it is just enough print in the mini version. the dress is super cute but the print would be a bit overwhelming on a petite frame. also, the fabric is pretty substantial, so it was a bit heavy if you had to wear it as a whole dress. bonus points for the pockets! what is it with my fascination with pockets!

are there summer trends you liked and will carry into fall/winter?

PFC #19 - trend benders

this is petite fashion challenge #19 hosted by the lovely pandaphilia (see the list of challenge participants here). our challenge is called "trend benders" where we have to take our favourite summer or fall 2012 trend and make it work for us - bend the trend to synch it with our personal style. the fall 2012 trend i'm trying and making my own? leather. it is edgy but i think can also be very feminine. this is pushing my personal style, actually. jury's still out! the other is mixing patterns, which i think looks good if done moderately.

and finally, a reminder that the glamour me jewels bracelet giveaway closes this friday. go to this post for more information! (edit: in my travel jet lag haze, i totally forgot to link up to my lovely amy and melissa's who what where: transition to fall outfits - go here for a list of the participants) i had this outfit in mind for it.

what trends are you going to try this fall?

black and red

black and red is such a fun combination. they play with and off of each other well - and i think it is such a classic and elegant duo. add some gold accents, and you have one of my favourite combinations (i packed a similar outfit here on my travel adventures).  i'm on leg one of three series of travel for work and have to turn my mind to packing again. this time, i procrastinated and packed the night before. a reason why i dread packing right now is because i'm not travelling in the summer where the weather is predictable. one of my trips is to orlando and i was told it is going to be raining the whole time. this is going to be an interesting challenge especially since i don't like to check my baggage! maybe i'll just pack a raincoat. or an umbrella.

how do you pack for different weather situations?

fall 2012: my can't buy list

with the weather getting cooler and the days getting shorter, i know fall is in the air. i start thinking of jackets and sweaters and boots. yes. even the dreaded boots. amber at easy petite looks had a great post (read it here) where she set out her "the anti-wishlist", or items she vows not to buy this season. there are a good many things i get over and over again, but these categories are definitely ones i must try to abide by for this fall/winter.

* do you have a "can't buy list"?*

1. the black shoe: they are my kryptonite. i love black pumps. this is such a classic staple that i can justify it because you can wear it with anything. but really even if the rationale is that "they're timeless", i do not need another pair. so, no more black shoes this fall. (even though i really really want these). those who know me are also likely chuckling at the impossibility of this declaration - and they're not wrong. this is going to be hard!

black shoes

2. skinny jeans: the silhouette is perfect for my figure because, well it gives me a figure. my frame is pretty straight, so these make me look long and curvy-ish. i also do have other pairs of pretty and sturdy denim, so, no jeans this season and in particular, no more skinny jeans. if i get anything this season, it would have to be suiting pants for work.

skinny jeans

3. blazers: the only exception to this one category is that i need to replace an old navy blazer that i've worn to shreds. otherwise, i do need to keep the blazer population down. work often justifies a lot of things, and suits and blazers are one of them. however, i do have a great selection of different sorts of blazers to keep things interesting until one combusts.

4. pencil skirts: just like the skinny jeans, pencil skirts give me length, which as every petite knows "if it makes you look taller, get it." however, i know that i can and should wear different styles of skirts. while not all of my skirts are pencil skirts, the majority are, and it's time to explore pleats, wide skirts, midi, mini skirts and the like. they always will have a spot in my closet though, so while i have them on a "can't buy list" the print or colour will have to be very spectacular for me to depart from the plan.

retro jade

TGIF everyone!! when i went to DC, i tried on the retro jade no. 2 pencil skirt and said to my best friend, "when this goes on sale.." when they had the extra 30% off sale, she reminded me of this. a good friend is someone who knows what you covet and what you never did. how many of you have had a friend say "why do you want this? you've never talked about this before." or "please for the love of all that is sacred, buy this so you can stop talking about it already." my girls K and I know this well.

retro jade is difficult to capture in photos. it is a nice cool mix of mint and teal - more green than blue. the wool feels the same as last year's double serge wool skirts. sizing is the same for me. i think the faux leather sleeves on this tee offset the primness of the skirt. i've been wanting to incorporate edgier items into my wardrobe. i want a leather skirt, but i have to think about that one. i can't wear it to work, and frankly we know on weekends, leather skirts are impractical for mom-gear. i recently got a few leather (2 'faux' leather; 2 'real' leather) and look forward to working these into my wardrobe.

*what do you think of leather clothing? how would you incorporate it into your closet? would you?*

Thursday, September 13, 2012

with september getting a bit cooler, i can feel the days of sandals and open toed shoes becoming few and far between. i will try to wear them as much as i can until it gets colder. i'd wear this outfit with a pair of pointy toed pumps at that point.

during club monaco's latest promotion, i got these cropped pants, identified on the site as "renay cropped pants" (here), did the whole sizing thing, and based on measurements, i went with the 2, which is one size up from my regular j crew size. they are a perfect fit and require no hemming. i'm really impressed with the weight of the fabric and the cut. the pants held out really well throughout the day with no funky puckers at the knees, which can happen with the j crew wool cafe capris.

the weird thing is that the tag said the style was "ursula".  i don't care if it's renay or ursula, but these pants fit, so they'll stay! i did a search on the site and got nothing under ursula, and now i'm not sure what will come if i get the same pants in a different colour.

*should we call this the mystery of the amazing club monaco pants?*
