hi everyone - i was doing one of these humm and haws today as i pondered the fate of this gap t-shirt maxi dress. on the US site, they have it in the petite version. sadly the canadian e-comm site did not, so i took a chance when they had their 30% off sale and got the XS. it ended up being 45$ after the discount.
i love the look of a maxi dress. however, i'm cognizant that: 1. my style hasn't been what you call bohemian; 2. i am petite and therefore, the risk with a maxi dress is that i may basically end up sweeping the floors with them so i am very reluctant to buy them online without a safety net of being able to return it. this is it, ladies and gents. i am indeed going to be cleaning people's floors with this dress for freeeeee if i keep it like this, or if i don't hem it.
i do have to say that the jersey material is SO soft. and the colour is amazing. belted, i get the few inches cheat, but i can't say that this is the structured look i'm comfortable with. thinking outside the box, though, is this something i could pull off? i'm still on the fence with this one.
so, what do you think dear readers? yay or nay?
(outfit - dress: gap, here; belt: club monaco, old, similar here; shoes: tory burch thora sandals, old, but other colourways here or here; necklace: amrita singh, old)

I would have said nay.... but then you accessorized it! YAY with accessories :)
ReplyDeletelol thanks Karen! xox
DeleteNot my favorite, but looks better with accessories. Loving the flip flops though. :)
ReplyDeletethanks bluedevil! i LOVE the flip flops too!
Deletehmm maybe nay :-/
ReplyDeletethanks Nila! i'm leaning at nay too..
DeleteYou don't look short at all! I love how you accessorized this dress and it hits you at a nice length. I say keep :)
ReplyDeletethanks Kat!! this is way past my comfort zone though!! :P
Deleteehh nay. One mantra I picked up from somewhere is feel good about what you spend your money on. Sometimes when you have to ask you already know the answer. I've decided against an otherwise perfect Rick Owens dress because in RO style it runs excessively long and I don't want to chop a whooping 20 inches off something not exactly cheap. ;P
ReplyDeleteomigosh!! 20 inches!! i love your Rick Owens pieces... girl sigh... and you are right - i usually don't ask but having asked the question and having my thoughts confirmed, tonight, i'll be packing up the dress to send back!! thank you for your input!
DeleteI just ordered and promptly returned this dress in the Coral color (in size Small Petite) so I know EXACTLY the qualms you have with this dress! Honestly, if you are looking for a super cute and flattering maxi dress, I think you can do better. You have a great figure and fabulous style, and this dress doesn't really emphasize either of those points (although it is improved with accessories). However, if you just want a soft, very comfy maxi for lazing around in or running errands, then I think you should keep it.
ReplyDeleteBased on the outfits I have seen in your blog though, this doesn't look like "you" in that this look is so unstructured I think it borders on sloppy (for you, since you always look impeccable). Also, I personally found the fabric a little bit too thin--I can see your bra-line, for instance, and I feel like it bunches oddly when belted.
i know what you mean - it is very smooshy and comfy.. but i felt sloppy in this. the search goes on!! thanks also for visiting my blog! xox
Deletereally cute the way you styled it. at first i was like, eh. but i think you could pull it off well. perfect for bumming days when you still want to look cute.
ReplyDeleteamber Easy Petite Looks
hi!! thanks amber! i am starting to think though that this was a good way to stretch myself, but it's not quite 100%...
DeleteI say nay - you've accessorized it very nicely but I don't think it's worth $45 for something you feel kind of ho-hum about. Plus, since it's a solid, I think it'd be easy to find something else close in style that fits you better.
ReplyDeletethank you SPG!! i agree with you - now, the fun part is to find something that will work!! xox
DeleteI say nay, too. You're too petite plus it looks a little overwhelming on you. BUT, that's just my opinion!
ReplyDeletethank you dear HeHe! it is alot of dress! lol. xox
Deletenay. It makes you look preggo, so unless you're hoping to get that sweet "expecting mom" parking spot or seat on the bus... LOL! I'd return it and get something else with that $45. It's just a big moo-moo on you.
ReplyDeleteLOL princess ghu! that's awesome. moo-moo is going back!! thank you!
Deletenay. it looks really comfy.. but not flattering.
ReplyDeleteJenn
A Petite Treat
thank you Jenn!! xox
DeleteNay. The dress doesn't give you any shape at all. Not to mention that it's really sheer.
ReplyDeletethanks cynthia - i sent it back today :)
DeleteOo i have the same coral necklace! I think the dress look a lot better with a belt!
